"...but names will never hurt me". [Videotape].
Brown, Thomas
While most are familiar with the expression, "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but names can never hurt me," children are often hurt by name-calling. This video with accompanying six page study guide is intended to show the effects of name-calling and inspire children to treat others with kindness and acceptance. The 22-minute video depicts a girl excluded and ridiculed by her peers, her reaction to the torment, and the efforts of a classmate to befriend her and enlighten the class. The guide first presents pre-presentation activities, summarizing the video and its overall goal. The guide next outlines presentation activities, including questions for discussion prior to viewing the video, and questions for eliciting responses to the video and to the problem of verbal abuse. Follow-up activities are then outlined, including development of a classroom action plan and classroom exercises. The guide concludes with annotated resources on bullying. (HTH)
