Playing Croquet with Flamingos: A Guide to Moderating Online Conferences.
This guide focuses on moderating non-pedagogical online conferences that use World Wide Web-based conferencing software, whether synchronous or asynchronous. The first section provides information on getting ready and discusses features and advantages of synchronous and asynchronous systems. The second section focuses on getting started, including determining objectives, making decisions about the conference itself, clarifying expectations, and technical support. The moderator's responsibilities are addressed in the third section, including organizational, social, and intellectual concerns. The fourth section describes factors that influence the outcome of an online conference, including the characteristics of the participants, their motivation, and the characteristics of a moderator.
