A Planning Guide for Designing Worksite Externships for Educators.

This guide, which is the product of a school-to-work (STW) leadership institute that was conducted to promote the development of collaborative initiatives linking STW with other school improvement strategies in Ohio, contains materials for and about worksite designing externships for educators. Included in the guide are the following items: STW overview; quick STW tips; what educators and business leaders need to know about teacher externships; overview of the Secretary's Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills (SCANS); and guidelines for organizing worksite externships. Concluding the guide are a 94-item STW bibliography and list of 29 STW Internet resources. Appendixes constituting approximately 50 percent of the guide contain the following: overview of the STW leadership institute; worksite preferences form; list of career clusters and categories; list of extern roles and responsibilities; questions to ask during company tours; comparison of internship and externship programs; agenda outline for worksite externship visits; worksite contact and worksite (host) confirmation forms; externship site checklist; worksite confirmation letter; leadership institute breakfast meeting agenda; checklist of worksite information for externs; SCANS onsite log; externship experience log; skills identification worksheet; externship debriefing team report; team member externship evaluation and worksite externship evaluation forms; and letter of appreciation to worksite hosts.
