Loving Each One Best: A Caring and Practical Approach to Raising Siblings.
Samalin, Nancy; Whitney, Catherine
Noting that parents of more than one child often are unprepared for coping with the competing demands of siblings, this book presents solutions to common parenting problems related to siblings and includes tips for meeting parents' as well as children's needs. Also included are results of a survey of parents who had attended parenting workshops regarding childrearing issues and a survey of children regarding their feelings about siblings. Chapter 1 describes how parental satisfaction can be blunted by feelings of frustration, disappointment, exhaustion, and guilt. Chapter 2 discusses how to cope with the arrival of the new baby whose entrance challenges the other children's sovereignty, and chapter 3 provides tips for easing the stress of daily routines. Chapter 4 presents solutions for when children fight, bicker, compete, namecall, and hit. Chapter 5 discusses how to be fair to siblings without treating them equally. Chapter 6 deals with finding special time alone with each child and celebrating his or her unique characteristics. Chapter 7 concerns ways to handle parental anger. Chapter 8 presents findings from surveys of children between 9 and 16 years regarding their feelings about their siblings. Chapter 9 describes where to find humor in trying moments in parenting siblings, while chapter 10 describes poignant sibling interactions and relationships, notes the importance of savoring these moments, and discusses the complications in adult sibling relationships. The book's three appendices contain the parents' and children's survey and a reading list of 77 books dealing with parenting issues. (KB)
