A Single Sex Profession? Female Staff Numbers in Commonwealth Universities.
This study of numbers of female academic and administrative staff at universities in British Commonwealth nations was based on staff data collected during 1997-98 for the "Commonwealth Universities' Yearbook." The survey covers 30 nations. Survey results are presented separately for academic staff and administrative staff. For academic staff, results are given for overall gender proportions, gender representation by status, gender division among heads of academic departments, and gender representation within selected academic subjects. Results confirm that women are still severely under-represented among full-time staff in both academic and administrative hierarchies of Commonwealth universities. Only at the level of lecturer do academic staff numbers begin to be equal. This trend is more marked in the developed nations, although there is no evidence that the developed countries are more progressive in appointing women to higher levels than their less-developed counterparts.
