This publication contains a selection of statistics on persons undertaking vocational training through contract of training arrangements (apprenticeships and traineeships) in Australia from July 1, 1997, to June 30, 1998. Figures are provided for the country as a whole and for the eight states and territories. Appendixes provide statistics on employer satisfaction and graduate placements. Highlights for the year include the following: (1) an estimated 195,500 persons were enrolled in apprenticeships or traineeships in fiscal year 1998, an increase of 11.5 percent over fiscal year 1997; (2) 123,200 apprentices and trainees began their programs during the year; (3) more than half of the participants were aged 20 years or more, continuing an upward trend in the age profile, and 39 percent were female, continuing an increase of the proportion of female participants; (4) approximately 50,000 persons completed their training during the year; and (5) approximately 94 percent of the apprentices and trainees were employed with the same employer as during their training program.
