How To Measure Attitudes. CSE Program Evaluation Kit, Volume 6. Second Edition.
Henerson, Marlene E.; Morris, Lynn Lyons; Fitz-Gibbon, Carol Taylor
The "CSE Program Evaluation Kit" is a series of nine books intended to assist people conducting program evaluations. This volume, sixth in the kit, is designed to help an evaluator select or design credible instruments to measure attitudes. The book discusses problems involved in measuring attitudes, including people's sensitivity about this kind of measurement and the difficulty of establishing the reliability and validity of individual measures. It lists many sources of available attitude instruments and gives precise directions for developing questionnaires, interviews, attitude rating scales, sociometric instruments, and observation schedules. It also suggests how to analyze and report results from attitude measures. The following chapters are included: (1) "An Introduction to the Measurement of Attitudes and Attitude Change"; (2) "Essential Preliminary Questions"; (3) "Selecting from among Alternative Approaches to Collecting Attitude Information"; (4) "Finding an Existing Measure"; (5) "Developing Your Own Measures: Questionnaires"; (6) "Developing Your Own Measures: Attitude Rating Scales"; (7) "Developing Your Own Measures: Interviews"; (8)"Developing Your Own Measures; Written Reports"; (9) "Developing Your Own Measures; Observation Procedures"; (10) "Developing Your Own Measures: Sociometric Instruments"; (11) "Validity and Reliability of Attitude Instruments"; and (12) "Summarizing, Analyzing, and Displaying the Data." An appendix contains the names and addresses of publishers of attitude measures. (Contains four tables, seven figures, and eight references.) (SLD)
