"If We Didn't Have Them, We'd Have To Reinvent Them." An Evaluation of Normal and Model Schools in New Zealand.
This report describes the evaluation of normal and model schools in New Zealand. Researchers examined the difference between the schools and the difference between them and other schools involved in preservice teacher education. The study used a mailed survey of the 22 normal and 8 model schools and telephone interviews with practicum coordinators from 5 colleges of education and 1 university school of education that worked closely with the normal and model schools. Researchers asked about how well the schools performed practicum responsibilities, the impact of the schools on teacher education in general, changes occurring in the teacher education environment and schools' responses, and the future capability of schools to respond to anticipated demands for teacher education. Results were taken to focus groups of principals in Wellington, Auckland, and Dunedin. Results indicated that the main differences between the normal and model schools and the other schools was that normal and model schools included the practicums as part of their core business. Many included the role in their charter statement. Normal and model schools had close partnerships with the colleges of education. Colleges of education considered normal and model schools essential to their programs. Normal and models schools did not cover the full range of socioeconomic status, and trainees did not have the chance to work with more diverse students. Two appendixes present the study questionnaires. (SM)
