Music in Every Classroom: A Resource Guide for Integrating Music Across the Curriculum, Grades K-8.
Sporborg, James Douglas
Since the 19th century, educators have used songs to captivate and motivate students, underscore a point, or make a lesson memorable. Research in cognitive psychology has confirmed that there are "multiple intelligences" and different, but often mutually reinforcing "ways of knowing" and learning. Intended for teachers who want to enrich the classroom experience with sound and music, this guide helps educators learn to use the unique power of music in the classroom. The guide is designed to help music teachers identify resources that support the integration of music with core curriculum for kindergarten through eighth grade. Resources in the guide are arranged according to discipline (language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies) and major topics are given within each subject area. Material is grouped according to format, with suggestions for further research sources for songs and books at the end of each topic. In addition to standard bibliographic information, annotations provide information on format and media, musical arrangement, individual song titles (for recorded material), and grade appropriateness. Cross references and a comprehensive subject index allows easy access to specific topics. (BT)
