This book outlines sloyd educational theory ("sloyd" being an umbrella term for different educational crafts in various areas and at different levels of the educational system whose scientific basis lies in crafts science). The following topics are among those discussed: methodological framework of research on sloyd education; sloyd education in various areas and at various levels within the educational system; teaching-studying-learning process in sloyd education and the steering system; the basic theories (educative sloyd as a holistic activity system, functions within the sloyd activity system, dimensions of educative sloyd actions, directions and strategies in educative sloyd actions, formative results of educative sloyd actions and learning); knowledge areas within sloyd education (knowledge related to sloyd production, knowledge related to the work object, overall knowledge areas); pupils' educative sloyd process and application of sloyd theories in education (dynamic-evolutional thinking; the experienced educative sloyd process and normative steering system; perspectives of description; the design, planning, and manufacturing phases); and emergence of a hierarchical systems theory of sloyd education. The report contains 44 references and 13 figures. Appended are a diagram of the sloyd educational process and an annotated bibliography of 12 research studies on sloyd education. (MN)
