Summary of Workshop on Graduate Student Attrition (September 22, 1997).

The purpose of the Workshop on Graduate Student Attrition was to address key gaps in knowledge and data about the problem of graduate school (doctoral-level) attrition. Participants included representatives of the academic research and graduate education administration communities, along with officials from disciplinary professional societies, The National Science Foundation, and other government scientific agencies. Results of the workshop are presented in sections: (1) The Concern; (2) The Rationale for Attrition Research; (3) Conceptual Issues; (4) Definitional Issues; (4) Timing of Attrition; (5) Institutional Factors; (6) Current Research and Databases; (7) Future Directions for Research; (8) Data Improvements Underway; (9) Changing the Graduate Experience; (10) Stakeholder Uses of Attrition Research; and (11) Caveats about Use of Attrition Data.
