Children's Books about Religion.
Dole, Patricia Pearl
Created to promote a mutual understanding and acceptance among various faiths and cultures throughout the world, this book is an annotated bibliography of religious children's books. It has almost 700 critical evaluations of books with distinct religious themes for children from preschool to middle school. Chapters are: (1) "Religion"; (2) "God"; (3) "Prayer"; (4) "The Bible"; (5) "The Old Testament/Hebrew Bible"; (6) "The New Testament and Jesus"; (7) "The Nativity Story and Christmas"; (8) "Christianity"; (9) "Christian Denominations and Churches"; (10) "Christian-Church History and Biography"; (11) "Judaism"; (12) "Jewish Holidays"; (13) "Native American Religions"; (14) "Buddhism"; (15) "Hinduism"; (16) "Islam"; and (17) "Other Religions." Topics include major religions, and African, Chinese, and Native American beliefs. Coverage ranges from age-appropriate reference materials to folktales, prose, poetry, plays, and picture books. Because the majority of publications concern Christianity and Judaism, these religions comprise the largest portion of the book. The Bible is discussed in a separate chapter, as are materials on a monotheistic god, comparative religion, and prayer. Holiday works are grouped within their respective faiths. Only books published after 1990 are covered in detail, but earlier titles of value are also noted. Contains author/title and subject index. (Author/AEF)
