The 3Ls of Introductory Web-Based Instructional Design: Linking, Layout, and Learner Support.
Dunlap, Joanna C.
This paper presents guidelines for World Wide Web-based instructional design, based on the 3Ls (i.e., linking, layout, and learner support). The first section, focusing on macro level design, discusses nodes and links, including how nodes work, determining nodes, node size, presentation format, characteristics of links, and kinds of links. The second section deals with micro level design, and focuses on the page/screen design issues of legibility, visibility, and recognizability. Basic typography is also discussed, and specific micro and macro level design guidelines for Web site and page layout are outlined. In the third section, detailed learner support strategies for Web sites are listed. Five figures list design guidelines for nodes and links, macro level design guidelines for Web site and page layout, micro level design guidelines for Web site and page layout, macro level learner support guidelines, and micro level learner support guidelines.
