This book offers a blueprint to help schools and students achieve high standards. It provides school leaders with action strategies for beginning or revisiting their reform efforts; each chapter reviews research on areas related to each of the eight Goals 2000. The introduction focuses on school reform over the past 50 years and the changes that have created organizational demands for a new approach to restructuring. Chapter 1 addresses children's readiness to learn and strategies for implementing an appropriate preschool learning environment. Characteristics of high-school dropouts and other school problems are examined in chapter 2, which emphasizes ways to increase graduation rates. Chapter 3 provides tips for increasing student achievement, and chapter 4 explores how to train a talented work force of professional educators. Chapter 5 discusses strategies for reform in science and mathematics, outlining three approaches for integrating science and mathematics, creating a plan for assessment, and integrating technology with mathematics and science education. Adult literacy and safe schools are explored in chapters 6 and 7, respectively, with each chapter providing strategies to reach these goals. Ways to involve parents in schools, such as establishing parent centers, are outlined in the last chapter. An epilogue looks at the challenges facing implementation of Goals 2000.
