Education and Work in Great Britain, Germany and Italy.
Jobert, Annette, Ed.; Marry, Catherine, Ed.; Tanguy, Lucie, Ed.; Rainbird, Helen, Ed.
This volume analyzes the literature in the field of education and work and establishes an institutional and intellectual cartography for three countries. It examines the multiple connections between education and work, through an analysis of the literature on the transition from school to work, on vocational training, and on the labor market. It summarizes the major debates in each country and contributes to an understanding of different intellectual traditions. It shows that concepts such as skill, unemployment rates, young people, and the transition from school to work are socially constructed and are thought about in ways that are nationally specific. The 19 papers are as follows: "Comparisons between an Area of Research in Germany, Great Britain, and Italy" (Annette Jobert, Catherine Marry, Lucie Tanguy); "Education, Vocational Training, and Employment in Germany" (Catherine Marry); "Thirty years of the Sociology of Education" (Beate Krais); "Relationships Between the Educational and Employment Systems" (Margit Frackmann); "Social Change and the Modernization of School-to-Work Transitions" (Walter R. Heinz, Ulrike Nagel); "The Relationship Between Education and Employment in German Industrial Sociology" (Ingrid Drexel); "Labor Market Transitions and Dynamics of Transitions in Germany" (Klaus Schoemann); "Institutions and the Market" (Lucie Tanguy, Helen Rainbird); "The 'Transition from School to Work' and Its Heirs" (David Raffe); "Labor Market Approaches to the Study of the Relationship between Education and (Un)Employment in the United Kingdom" (David Ashton); "Is This a Way of Understanding Education-Work Relations?" (Lynne Chisholm); "The Social Construction of Skill" (Helen Rainbird); "The Approaches of Economists to the Relationship between Training and Work" (David Marsden); "Employment, Education, and Training in Italy" (Annette Jobert); "Analysis of Research in the Sociology of Education: 1960-1990" (Luciano Benadusi, Paolo Botta); "Youth Employment and Public Action in Italy" (Marinella Giovine); "Connections Between Collective Bargaining, Job Training, and Educational Research in Italy" (Saul Meghnagi); "Industrial Development and Training Policies" (Vittorio Capecchi); and "Socio-Economic Approaches to the Labor Market" (Paolo Calza Bini). An index is provided. (YLB)
