Pupil Membership and Related Information, Fall 1997.
This document contains information about student membership in the Colorado public schools as of fall 1997. At that time, there were 687,167 students in Colorado's public schools, an increase of 2.0% over the fall 1996 membership. This increase was greater at the secondary level. Beginning in fall 1990, membership each year has surpassed the previous peak membership of 1972. Between 1993 and 1997 fall membership in public schools increased by 21.7% for minority students and 5.8% for white students. In 1997, Native Americans, Asians, Blacks, and Hispanics represented 28.7% of Colorado's student membership, but only 9.2% of teachers. The state's 10 largest school districts accounted for 55.0% of the total student membership in fall 1997, and they represented 54.3% of the growth in membership from 1993 to 1997. Most of the state's students (54%) are in the Denver Metropolitan Area. Membership data also indicate that the fall 1997 student/teacher ratio of 18:1 represents a decrease of 0.3 percentage points from fall 1996. The graduation rate for the Class of 1997 was 78.5%, an increase of 0.8% above the rate reported for the Class of 1996. Nine tables present the data.
