Designing Professional Development for Teachers of Science and Mathematics.
Loucks-Horsley, Susan; Hewson, Peter W.; Love, Nancy; Stiles, Katherine E.
This comprehensive guide discusses how to design staff development in science and math. It is tailored specifically to the needs of individual schools or departments. Vignettes from real schools illustrate concepts within the book. The book provides 15 strategies for professional development and describes each one with its underlying assumptions and implementation requirements. The eight chapters are as follows: (1) Images of Learning and Development (vignettes from the field); (2) A Framework for Designing Professional Development; (3) The Knowledge That Supports Professional Development; (4) Strategies for Professional Learning; (5) Context Factors Influencing Professional Development; (6) Critical Issues in Designing Professional Development; (7) The Design Process in Action; and (8) Voices from the Field (stakeholders' views about planning, implementing, and following up professional development). Five resources chapters contain detailed descriptions of professional development programs or initiatives: "The Workshop Center at City College of New York" (Hubert M. Dyasi); "Teach-Stat: A Model for Professional Development in Data Analysis and Statistics for Teachers of Grades Kindergarten Through 6" (Susan N. Friel); "The California Middle Grades Mathematics Renaissance" (Judy Mumme); "Global Systems Science: A Professional Development Program for High School Teachers" (Cary I. Sneider); and "Professional Development for Elementary School Science Curriculum Implementation: The Case of Cambridge, Massachusetts" (Karen Worth and Melanie Barron). (SM)
