The Future of the Community College: A Faculty Perspective.
Academic Senate for California Community Colleges, Sacramento.
This booklet discusses the future of California community colleges from a faculty perspective. Publication of this perspective was made in response to the many critics who have called for the radical restructuring of community colleges. It responds to those who demand that the colleges function as business corporations, complete with customers and markets, and uses the occasion to engage in an assessment of strengths and weaknesses. The document aims to map a course for the future, and describes resolutions S971.2, "Faculty Perspectives on the Future;" S971.5, "Redefining Faculty Productivity;" and F975.8, "Academic Excellence." Together these resolutions put forward an extensive set of basic principles and commitments for California educators. Included in the booklet are the following sections: (1) History and Background; (2) Synopsis; (3) Introduction; (4) The Past; (5) The Present; and (6) The Future. Faculty conclude that, in essential ways, the future of the community college should look very much like the present. They also conclude that community colleges have already evolved into lifelong learning centers. (Contains 40 citations.) (AS)
