Young people need help in learning how to use alternative dispute resolution skills at school. Methods for teaching these skills are presented in this manual. The training centers on the following major themes: The Mediation Process, Cultural Diversity, Communication Skills, Feelings, Mediation Techniques, Dealing with Difficult Situations, and Being Your Own Mediator. The manual is designed for five 3-hour sessions using two trainers. Complete guidelines for each session include a timeline for discussions, demonstrations, role plays and other exercises. Topics are grouped under five sessions: Session 1 explores "Ways We Deal with Conflict,""The Mediator and the Mediation Process,""Listening Skills,""Understanding Other People's Point of View." In session 2 "Cultural Diversity and Mediation,""Feelings," and "'I' Messages" are covered. Sessions 3 and 4 are devoted to mediation techniques and role plays, and Session 5 is a follow-up with review. Mediation techniques are taught in three phases (beginning, middle, ending) with topics such as: Help Disputants Define the Problem, Enforce the Rules, Dig for Underlying Information, Balance the Power, Break Down Larger Issues, Stay on the Subject, Point Out Areas of Agreement, and What Will Happen If.... Appendices include material on setting up a student mediation program, program forms, student training handouts, and numerous role-play protocols. (EMK)
