The Mindful School: How To Assess Authentic Learning. Revised Edition.
Growth toward the goals of the mindful school requires new and more authentic and appropriate forms of assessment. This volume describes a wide range of alternative forms of assessment, presenting them in a meaningful and practical format so that they can be applied in classrooms. Having a range of strategies for assessment allows for the diversity of student learning styles and yields usable information for gauging student learning. Performance tasks, portfolio development, and scoring rubrics are just a few of the assessment tools teachers are implementing to measure student learning. Learning logs, reflective journals, graphic organizers, interviews, and peer editing are some of the other authentic assessments that help students develop problem- solving skills and transfer their learning to life. The following chapters are included: (1) "Thoughtful Outcomes"; (2) "Standardized Tests"; (3) "Teacher-Made Tests"; (4) "Portfolios"; (5) "Performances and Exhibitions"; (6) "Projects"; (7) "Learning Logs and Journals"; (8) "Metacognitive Reflection"; (9) "Observation Checklists"; (10) "Graphic Organizers"; (11) "Interviews and Conferences"; and (12) "The Final Grade." Examples and pages for noting teacher reflections are included, as is a bibliography of 111 items. (SLD)
