The Educational Progress of Women, 1978 to 1997.

This report examines trends in the educational progress of women who attended Maryland institutions of higher education from 1978 to 1997. Data on the educational achievements of women are compared with those of men, organized under the general categories of enrollment, retention and graduation rates, degrees or certificates conferred, and employment of graduates. Eight figures and associated text provide information on: (1) representation of women students: 1978 and 1997; (2) enrollment in science programs by gender: 1978-97; (3) second year retention rates for freshman cohorts at Maryland four-year public colleges and universities, by gender: 1978 and 1996; (4) six-year graduation rates for freshman cohorts at Maryland four-year public colleges and universities, by gender: 1978 and 1991; (5) four-year graduation and transfer rates at Maryland community colleges, by gender: 1978 and 1993; (6) percent of degrees earned in Maryland, by gender: 1997; (7) median annual salary of bachelor's degree recipients employed full-time, by gender: 1981-96; and (8) average annual salary of community college graduates employed full-time, by gender: 1984-96. An appendix provides 27 tables of additional data, organized according to the same general categories. (DB)
