Morgan, Frank B.
This report presents data on degrees conferred by the nation's postsecondary education institutions. The report is based on the 1995-96 Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System's "Completion" survey of approximately 4,000 institutions in the 50 states and the District of Columbia. Highlights of the report include: 2.2 million degrees were awarded (about the same as the previous year), of which 24.7 percent were associate degrees, 51.8 percent were bachelor's degrees, 18.1 percent were master's degrees, 2.0 percent were doctoral degrees, and 3.4 percent were first-professional degrees; the majority of degrees were awarded by public institutions; the majority of degrees at the master's level and below were awarded to women; 18.2 percent of degrees were awarded to minority students, with their share of degrees highest at the associate level and lowest at the doctoral level; almost one-fifth of first-professional degrees were awarded to minorities, of these 42.6 percent were awarded to Asian/Pacific Islanders, 32.2 percent were awarded to Blacks, and 22.2 percent were awarded to Hispanics. A glossary is appended. (DB)
