Good Talking Words: A Social Communications Skills Program for Preschool and Kindergarten Classes.
Paulson, Lucy Hart; van den Pol, Rick
The "Good Talking Words" program aims to help children develop and demonstrate the social communication skills that are vital to school and life success. It uses an active, direct instructional approach for preschool and kindergarten students that uses language experiences to teach specific, prosocial behaviors that will help children develop a positive attitude. Intended for use by classroom teachers, speech and language pathologists, social services providers, or other educators, the program contains various materials: a classroom manual, 43 blackline masters, 19 skill pictures, and 11 posters. Twelve basic lessons focus on specific concepts and vocabulary (such as Good Listening Bodies, Good Greeting Words, Good Talking Rules, Good Turn Taking Kids, and Feeling Words) and may be conducted as a whole group activity using puppets, colored pictures and posters, a literature story, and discussion. Program components offer a comprehensive and positive method of developing these skills on a daily basis through practice, modeling, reinforcement, and re-teaching in the home and school environment.
