The Author Studies Handbook: Helping Students Build Powerful Connections to Literature. Grades K-8.
Kotch, Laura; Zackman, Leslie
Intended for grades K-8, this book will help teachers and students launch their own author study programs, making powerful connections with authors while nurturing a community of readers. It argues that, with author study, all students form mentor relationships with authors; gain access to the world of authors and books; develop a wide range of effective reading strategies; and form a community of readers. The book presents strategies, activities, ideas, recommendations and sample author studies. Eleven chapters make up the book: (1) Author Studies: An Overview of the Essentials; (2) Choosing an Author; (3) Creating a Language-Rich Environment; (4) Connecting Students with Authors; (5) Teaching Skills and Strategies; (6) Grouping for Author Studies: A Sample Katherine Paterson Study; (7) Read-Aloud Author Studies: A Sample Ed Young Study; (8) A Sample Illustrator Study: Peter Catalanotto; (9) Integrating Curriculum through an Author Study; (10) Assessment and Evaluation; and (11) A Sample Schoolwide Model: "Meet the Writers." Ten appendixes (including resources for information about authors and illustrators, surveys, forms, letters, and checklists) are attached. (SR)
