Against the Odds: How "At-Risk" Children Exceed Expectations.
Bempechat, Janine
Focusing on the factors that contribute to success in school, this book provides a vital resource for parents, psychologists and educators. A 6-year study that closely followed high-achieving poor and minority students is described. More than 1,000 fifth and sixth grade students in public and private schools took part in the study. This book addresses the fundamental questions at the heart of the work: How do homes where children are doing well in school differ from those where children are performing poorly? What goes on in these homes that supports children's success in school? Findings demonstrate that high-achieving children, no matter what their ethnic or cultural background, have similar perceptions about their parents' educational beliefs and practices. Insights into the keys to their high academic accomplishments are discussed, and issues of the next steps in research are considered. (EMK)
