Improving Attitudes of Students toward Social Studies.
This report describes a program to improve the attitudes of fourth-grade students toward social studies. Surveys of fourth-graders, their parents, teachers, and community members were conducted to find out their attitudes toward social studies. Students and parents reported a lack of interest in social studies. Faculty reported they were inadequately prepared to meet the challenges posed in the classroom by rapidly changing demographics, increased class size, increased cultural diversity and varying cognitive abilities. Intervention strategies included: (1) use of historical fiction; (2) cooperative learning groups; (3) hands-on activities; and (4) graphic organizers. As a result of the four interventions, a classroom environment was established that stimulated interest in social studies and student attitudes toward social studies were greatly improved.
