This book is designed to provide prospective and practicing teachers with: (1) a concise presentation of assessment principles that clearly and specifically relate to instruction, (2) current research in the field, and (3) practical and realistic examples of assessment and suggestions for assessment built into the instructional process. The book is organized by what teachers do prior to, during, and after an instructional segment, rather than by type of assessment technique. Chapters 1 through 3 present the fundamental principles of assessment and instruction, with emphasis on the importance of a teacher's professional judgment and decision making. Chapter 4 summarizes assessment activities that occur before instruction begins, and chapter 5 examines assessment that occurs during instruction. Chapters 6 through 10 discuss various types of assessments for different types of learning outcomes that are measured at the end of an instructional segment. Chapter 11 examines what teachers do with assessment information in the form of grading and reporting the results, and chapter 12 reviews the assessment of students who have been mainstreamed. Finally, chapter 13 summarizes the important information concerning the administration, interpretation, and use of standardized tests. Several instructional aids have been included to facilitate understanding and applying the material. These include cognitive maps at the beginning of each chapter, key terms, teacher quotes, chapter summaries, review exercises, suggestions for action research, and use of graphic illustrations.
