Pilgrims: A Simulation of the First Year at Plymouth Colony.
This simulation allows students to learn about the struggle of daily life in Plymouth Colony. Students experience the hardships of life in the New World as they make decisions and face consequences as the Pilgrims did nearly 400 years ago. The unit is divided into nine phases with each phase taking approximately one hour of class time. Students review the story of the Pilgrims, form teams, and create a list of 104 colonists. They must select a site for their colony then board a "ship" marked out on the floor for the voyage. After landing, students create their own laws and post sentries. Teams begin working in their colonies to build houses, search for food, and plant crops. Each stage of play involves completion of tasks related to the topic. Students compete against each other in teams gaining as many points as possible. The simulation concludes with a "Pilgrim Test," a search for the Ultimate Pilgrim, and an optional Thanksgiving feast. Suggestions are included for modifying the unit for shorter periods of time. (EH)
