The Open-Ended Approach: A New Proposal for Teaching Mathematics.

Research into problem solving and higher-order thinking skills in school mathematics was being addressed in Japan as early as the 1970's. Although this book clearly addresses the important aspects of problem solving, it also has implications for improving assessment in problem solving. The first phase of Japanese research on the open-ended approach to teaching mathematics is also discussed. This book contains seven chapters which include: (1) "The Significance of an Open-Ended Approach"; (2) "An Example of Lesson Plan Development"; (3) "Developing Lesson Plans"; (4) "Examples of Teaching in Elementary Schools"; (5) "Examples of Teaching in the Lower Secondary Schools"; (6) "Examples of Teaching in the Upper Secondary Schools"; and (7) "Round-Table Discussions To Review the Project".
