Lesbians in Academia: Degrees of Freedom.
Mintz, Beth, Ed.; Rothblum, Esther D., Ed.
This anthology presents 37 papers which address various aspects of the professional paths of academic lesbians. An introduction identifies the following themes: (1) a particular academic setting did not predict women's experiences; and (2) women's experiences were predicted by the particular academic cohort they represented divided into three generations (the first women in a department, the second or third women in a department, and women who had been trained with and by other women). The introduction also notes that, overall, the accounts are quite positive. It is suggested that being a lesbian in academia may be easier for U.S. women than for women in many other nations. Twenty-nine of the papers provide personal narratives; two papers analyze the lesbian experience; four papers focus on race, class, age and the question of identity politics; and two papers examine lesbian studies, queer studies, and theorizing the lesbian experience.
