Women and Management in Higher Education. Final Report. CHESS Workshop (2nd, Cape Town, South Africa, May 27-31, 1996).
The Commonwealth Higher Education Support Scheme (CHESS) 1996 workshop was designed to facilitate the development of women managers and leaders in the universities of the British Commonwealth. The management of change by women leaders in higher education was especially emphasized. The 36 participants represented 16 countries and were senior managers and trainers responsible for staff development within their institutions. Managers were advised to be cognizant of the structural and legal processes of change, as well as personal and sociocultural components. Workshop speeches and newly developed training modules focused on three areas: women in leadership positions in higher education, women and research, and women and university governance. Uses of the training materials were identified, including adaptations for different cultures. The research module considered developing staff members' capacity to plan and undertake research, work collaboratively on a research team, and write and publish. The governance module considered how universities are governed and how university legislation is developed, as well as ways to develop mentoring and networking schemes. Background information on the workshop is included, along with some results of a workshop evaluation, and specific outcomes of the workshop.
