Broadway Costumes on a Budget: Big-Time Ideas for Amateur Producers.
Litherland, Janet; McAnally, Sue
Adhering to the rule that "costumes are not clothes" and listing 100 musicals under 8 general categories, this guidebook applies a "crossover system" whereby costumes from one show can easily be altered for any other show within the same category. The eight costume styles used in the guide are labeled: Medieval/Shakespearean; The Old West; The Turn of the Century; The 1920s; The 1930s-1940s; The 1950s-1960s; Myriad Periods; and In Your Dreams. The first chapter in the guide--Costumes Are Not Clothes--provides background information about the crossover costume system and list which musicals fit into which category. The second chapter--Preventive Medicine for Everyone Involved in High School Productions--explains why doing musicals builds teenagers' confidence, teaches cooperation and teamwork, demands commitment and responsibility, and provides a sense of accomplishment unlike any other. The rest of the chapters address the eight categories. Appendixes contain information on the costume committee's "best buddies," present a list of music licensing agencies, offer an index of shows, and provide a general index. (NKA)
