Lifelong Learning. A Guide to Adult Education in the Church.
Grothe, Rebecca, Ed.
This book contains eight papers about lifelong learning in the Christian church. The preface and foreword are written by Rebecca Groth and H. George Anderson, respectively. (1) "The Gospel Calls Us" (Margaret A. Krych) examines five theological themes of lifelong learning. Adult development and learning styles are considered in (2) "What Teachers Need to Know about Adults Today" (Robert L. Conrad). (3) "Principles of Adult Learning" (Kent L. Johnson, Nelson T. Strobert) discusses the theory of adult learning, formal and informal learning, and motivation for adult education. (4) "Teaching Matters: The Role of the Teacher" (Luther E. Lindberg) points out that teaching is at the center of the church's mission. The Bible, church history, theology, and ethics are discussed in (5)"Content Areas of Adult Education" (Donald R. Just, Eugene C. Kreider). The stories of four congregations are presented in (6) "Exploring Opportunities for Adult Education" (Mary E. Hughes, Diane J. Hymans). (7) "Making the Connections" (Norma Cook Everist, Susan K. Nachtigal) explores ways of connecting education and the following: ministry in daily life; mission; and education, spirituality, and worship. Planning cooperatively, supporting and recognizing teachers, educating educators, reaching out, and evaluating are the topics addressed in (8) "Organizing for Adult Education" (Norma Cook Everist, Susan K. Nachtigal). (MN)
