Phonemic Awareness: A Review of Literature.
Wilson, Sheila
This literature review examines the relationship between phonemic awareness and the ability to read. It addresses four main issues: (1) if phonemic awareness is a prerequisite for or a consequence of learning to read; (2) what is needed to teach phonemic awareness; (3) tasks or activities and assessment tools to develop phonemic awareness; and (4) other areas of literacy linked to phonemic awareness. After an introduction, sections of the review are: statement of the problem; definitions; history of the topic; major issues; controversies; programs; contributors; synthesis and analysis; conclusion; and recommendations (including making phonemic awareness part of the everyday curriculum in preschool, kindergarten, and first grade; providing for phonemic awareness training and inservicing needs ahead of time; finding a program that will complement any existing curriculum; and evaluating successes and failures with pride.
