The Role of Subject Matter in Adult Learning.
Galusha, Jill M.
Selecting appropriate teaching strategies to optimize learning of a particular body of knowledge presents a challenge to adult educators. There has been little emphasis, however, on the role that subject matter plays in the learning process. From a literature review, a model that relates teaching methods to subject matter and learner dependence can be constructed. Elements of the model include the following: subject matter, prior knowledge, pedagogical theory and practice, subject matter classification along a continuum related to student dependence-independence, and use of a variety of learning strategies related to the subject matter and the dependence or independence of the student.
