Higher Education in Europe. Higher Education Policy Series 16.
Gellert, Claudius, Ed.
This book addresses some of the major institutional and structural changes that have occurred in European universities and other tertiary institutions in recent years. It includes descriptive accounts of new developments in organizational patterns and discusses how new demands from the labor market and changing sociopolitical expectations have modified the roles and purposes of higher education institutions. Also discussed are influences of the European Community integration on the system of higher education. Following an introductory chapter that summarizes these changing patterns, chapters include: (1) "Structures of Higher Education Systems in Europe" (Ulrich Teichler); (2) "Inertia and Resistance to Change of the Humboldtian University" (Einhard Rau); (3) "The End of the Dual System? The Blurring of Boundaries in the British Tertiary Education System" (Maurice Kogan); (4) "Tertiary Diversification in France and the Conditions of Access" (Jean-Pierre Jallade and others); (5) "Moving Towards Institutional Differentiation: The Italian Case" (Roberto Moscati); (6) "The Spanish University in Transition" (Emilio Lamo de Espinosa); (7) "The Transformation of Higher Education in Portugal" (Eduardo Marcal Grilo); (8) "Main Features of Higher Education in Greece" (Christos Saitis); (9) "Goal Enlargement and Differentiation: The Evolution of the Binary System in Ireland" (Patrick Clancy); (10) "Social and Political Conditions for the Emerging Tertiary Structures in the Netherlands" (Peter A. M. Maassen and others); (11) "New Tasks and Roles for Higher Education in Belgium and Luxembourg" (Willy Wielemans and Johan L. Vanderhoeven); (12) "Reform and Differentiation in the Danish System of Higher Education" (Paul Bache); (13) "Higher Education and the Constitution of the European Community" (Bruno de Witte); (14) "Developments in European Community Politics of Higher Education--Observations from Outside" (Erich Leitner); (15) "Against the Stream: Australia's Policy of Tertiary Integration" (Ingrid Moses); and (16) "Structures and Functional Differentiation--Remarks on Changing paradigms of Tertiary Education in Europe" (Claudius Gellert).
