This manual is intended to provide specific guidelines for meeting the needs of students who are assisted by medical technology in the educational setting. The manual is divided into two sections: Section 1 discusses principles and issues concerned with applying medical technology in schools, and Section 2 details the various procedures and provides checklists and guidelines. Section 1 contains the following chapters: (1) "Students Who Require Medical Technology in School" (Terry Heintz Caldwell and others); (2) "Legal Issues in the Education of Students with Special Health Care Needs" (Janice Rutledge Janz and others); (3) "Entrance and Planning Process for Students with Special Health Care Needs" (Terry Heintz Caldwell and others); (4) "Transportation of Students with Special Health Care Needs" (Joan E. Daley and Susan Murray Larsen); (5) "Special Health Concerns: Universal Precautions and Infection Control in a School Setting" (Richard G. Giardina and Christine E. Psota); and (6) "Useful Documents" (checklists and a form for developing the Individualized Health Care Plan). Section 2 provides specific guidelines for the following procedures: tube feeding, intravenous lines, dialysis, clean intermittent catheterization, ostomy care, and respiratory care. Thirty-two checklists detailing steps of each procedure are included, as is a glossary of relevant medical terms. (DB)
