Portfolio Models: Reflections across the Teaching Profession.
McLaughlin, Maureen; Vogt, Mary Ellen; Anderson, Joanne A.; DuMez, Judy; Peter, Marian Graeven; Hunter, Alyce
This book looks at how portfolios may be used in the teaching profession as a powerful tool to help educators examine their beliefs about teaching, achieve personal growth and development, and work toward self-improvement. Each part of the book is independently authored. Section 1, by Maureen McLaughlin and Mary Ellen Vogt, focuses on the evaluative use of professional portfolios. Its primary goal is to create a link between current assessment theory and teacher evaluation practices as they relate to an effective collaborative model that is goal based, collegial, and multi-faceted. Section 2, by Joanne Anderson, Judith DuMez, and Marian Graeven Peter looks at the role of portfolios in preservice teacher preparation programs, where they are used as a major criterion in a three-step process: (1) admission to the professional level of course work; (2) admission to student teaching; and (3) cataloging and showcasing acquired skills, attitudes, and beliefs for successful entrance into the job market. Section 3, by Alyce Hunter, describes developing teacher portfolios, extending the concept to include administrators. The portfolios are presented as guides for reflective practice and ways to enhance professional growth for both teachers and administrators. (RS)
