Women Helping Girls with Choices: A Handbook for Community Service Organizations.
Bingham, Mindy; Stryker, Sandy
This book offers helpful suggestions for fostering community involvement in career awareness and advocacy issues related to young girls and women. Direct service projects are addressed as well as advocacy projects involving schools and the communities in providing wider opportunities for young women. Recent research data is presented relating to the increasing feminization of poverty, high teenage pregnancy rate, high school dropout rate, and the unrealistic attitude girls and young women continue to exhibit toward work and their futures. The handbook provides a step-by-step process for starting and sustaining projects in the local community. Chapter titles include: (1) "Introduction"; (2) "Getting Started"; (3) "Advocacy Through Publicity and Promotion"; (4) "Sample Projects"; (5) "Fundraising"; and (6) "Long-Range Planning." Resources and additional information are offered. (EH)
