Manuel de phonologie fonctionnelle (Manual of Functional Phonology).
The textbook, entirely in French, is an introduction to functional phonology. The first six chapters present the basics of functional phonology, insisting on the specific aspects of this approach for the description of languages. Principles and procedures of synchronic analysis are outlined and illustrated through many examples. Chapter 7 is devoted to dynamic synchrony and diachrony. The general structure and functioning of phonological systems are examined in chapter 8, with examples drawn from a number of languages. Chapter 9 gives a brief summary of the history of phonology, and chapter 10 addresses a problem of a more epistemological nature, the theoretical foundations of phonology as part of a model of language. Because the textbook is also a workbook, exercises pertaining to many languages are included, with answers provided. (Author/MSE)
