Functional Projections and Event Structure.
Khym, Hangyoo; Kookiattikoon, Supath
Kansas Working Papers in Linguistics, v22 n1 p73-93 1997
Previous theory concerning the variable behavior verbs in unaccusative/unergative alternation in Dutch, Hebrew, and Italian, which concludes that the unergative/unaccusative distinction is not syntactic but aspectual/semantic, is challenged. Discrepancies and inconsistencies are found in the grammatical functions of aspectual functional projections according to this theory, and other arguments are found for some patterns. A new structure is proposed for the event aspectual syntax. Arguments are made against the Partitive Case Hypothesis and against some observations on the different syntactic behavior between definite/specific noun phrase objects and indefinite/non-specific noun phrase objects in German and Finnish.
