Group Treatment of Adult Survivors of Childhood Sexual Abuse: A Literature Review.
Smith, Karen Ledbetter
Although group treatment techniques have gained substantial support for their use in the remediation of the effects of childhood sexual abuse (CSA), little empirical research has been performed on this subject. So as to assess the status of this treatment form, a review of the empirical research on group treatment of CSA is presented in this report. Following a synopsis of the methodological issues, such as sampling, instruments used, and data analyses, results of the review are grouped according to the focus of the research efforts: the characteristics of clients who complete group, the effectiveness of time-limited groups, the relative importance of Yalom's curative factors, and the impact of specific group interventions. Suggestions for further research in this area include the following: use of controlled studies; use of larger samples (including both men and women of diverse ethnic minority groups and varied socioeconomic background); further investigation of specific therapeutic techniques; review of treatment length and format; and exploration of the complementary roles of group and individual therapy for adult survivors. Clinical implications of the findings are also discussed. Contains approximately 175 references. (RJM)
