Long Ago Times. Windows on Social Studies: Multicultural Adventures through Literature.
Westley, Joan; Melton, Holly
This resource book is one of a series containing lesson plans for grades 1-3 designed to support children's literature books sharing familiar social studies themes. "Long Ago Times" presents eight different children's books related to the theme. For each book social studies concepts are presented, followed by four activities called "windows." Some of these activities are cooking, making music, creating art, conducting interviews, and constructing three-dimensional maps. These allow for discussion and comparison by the students of the lives of diverse people, past and present. A word bank, follow-up questions, and a synthesis section allow students to process information about the story characters and their own lives. Illustrations and a materials list conclude each activity section. The background readings used in this resource book include: (1) "When I Was Young in the Mountains" (Cynthia Rylant); (2) "A New Coat for Anna" (Harriet Ziefert); (3) "Dakota Dugout" (Ann Turner); (4) "Follow the Drinking Gourd" (Jeanette Winter): (5) "The Keeping Quilt" (Patricia Polacco); (6) "The Adventures of Obadiah" (Brinton Turkle); (7) "When Clay Sings" (Byrd Baylor); and (8) "Sarah Morton's Day: A Day in the Life of a Pilgrim Girl" (Kate Waters).
