Purposeful Play with Your Preschooler: A Learning-Based Activity Book.

Noting that the preschool years play a crucial role in cognitive development, this book offers Piagetian-based educational activities for parents or teachers and preschool children that can be integrated into daily routines in a variety of everyday settings. The book is divided into two parts, the first describing cognitive development from a Piagetian perspective, and the second comprised of activity descriptions. Part 1 considers how children acquire knowledge, focuses on limitations on logical thinking during the preoperational period, and examines language, number concepts, and space and time concepts. Part 2, the bulk of the book, begins with guidelines for providing feedback and reinforcement during learning activities and continues with age-appropriate activities for children ages 1 to 5 years in the following areas: (1) creative exploration; (2) fine motor skills; (3) gross motor skills; (4) language development; (5) mathematics; (6) science; (7) self-help skills; and (8) writing skills. The chapters are organized according to the setting in which the activity may be used, and further according to type of activity. In addition to activities which may be conducted in any setting, there are activities for home learning centers, parks, cars, and stores. The description for each activity contains its subject, recommended age level, purposes, materials needed, and procedures. Appended are lists of basic equipment and supplies and suggested preschool literature, recordings, videotapes, and computer software. Contains approximately 40 references. (KB)
