The Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) provides comparative assessments of student outcomes, instructional practices, curricula, and cultural contexts. The state of Minnesota participated in the study as a 'mini nation' and this document is a preliminary report of the results. This summary provides a picture of the performances of almost 5,000 Minnesota students as compared to their peers around the world in science and mathematics. The results of the study will help to shape education policy and implement the Minnesota Graduation Standards. This report provides details on Minnesota eighth grade achievement results compared to those of the whole United States and other nations in mathematics and science content areas, a summary of contextual factors impacting mathematics and science achievement, sample items, gender differences in eighth grade mean achievement, and recommendations for change in policy and practice.
