Interdisciplinary Lively Application Projects (ILAPs).

The United States Military Academy leads a consortium of 12 schools located throughout the country in an effort to improve educational culture through the enhancement of interdisciplinary cooperation and coordination. The primary activity of this program is the development and use of Interdisciplinary Lively Application Projects (ILAPs), the goals of which are to wed mathematics with the concepts and principles of partner disciplines, to promote curricular reorganization by focusing on student growth in problem solving, and to promote faculty growth through the development processes. This volume contains a considerable amount of classroom resource material in the form of project handouts that instructors can use for student homework assignments. These ILAPs are interdisciplinary and require students to use scientific and quantitative reasoning, mathematical modeling, symbolic manipulation skills, and questions involving one or more disciplines. Sample solutions, background material, instructor notes, and a student writing guide are included as needed for the projects. Several supporting articles that describe uses for these projects are also included. (JRH)
