Each year, Piedmont Virginia Community College (PVCC) conducts a study to determine longitudinal minority enrollment data and trends to assist those involved in planning student recruitment and retention activities. Data are obtained from the Student Enrollment Booklets compiled each term by the Virginia Community College System. Findings for fall 1996 included the following: (1) 672 minority students enrolled at PVCC during fall 1996, accounting for 16.4% of the student body, a record percentage; (2) among the minority students, 479 were African-American, 96 were Asian/Pacific Islanders, 42 were Hispanics, 7 were American Indians or Alaskan Natives, and 48 classified themselves as other; (3) while the number of African American students enrolled at the college increased by 20.8% between fall 1994 and fall 1995, it decreased by 5.1% between fall 1995 and fall 1996; (4) between fall 1995 and fall 1996, white student enrollment declined by 4.9% and the enrollment of students who were other than African American or white increased by 14.9%; (5) in fall 1996, 19.5% of white and 20.3% of African American students were enrolled full-time; and (6) 24.2% of fall 1996 African American students were enrolled in occupational/technical programs, compared to 16% of white students and 9.8% of students from other ethnic groups.
