The Writing Road to Reading: The Spalding Method of Phonics for Teaching Speech, Writing, & Reading. Fourth Revised Edition.
Spalding, Romalda Bishop; Spalding, Walter T.
A fully detailed teacher's manual for classroom, home, or tutorial use, this book is for the child in the beginning grades, the pupil who needs remedial work, or any adult studying English as a second language, who will find learning by the Spalding Method a practical, quick way of mastering verbal skills. The book notes that the Spalding Method teaches students to hear, say, and write almost simultaneously so that all avenues to the mind reinforce each other in the learning process and the student naturally progresses from writing to reading within a few months. After a foreword by S. Farnham-Diggory and an introduction to the Spalding Method, chapters in the book are (1) The Teacher's Role; (2) The Phonograms; (3) Teaching Handwriting with the Phonograms; (4) Spelling Rules and the Notebook; (5) Teaching Spelling by Using the Phonograms and the Rules; (6) Teaching in the Different Grades; and (7) Advancing Basic Education. A nearly 300-item list of selected trade books by grade level is attached. (RS)
