True Needs, True Partners: Museums and Schools Transforming Education.
Hirzy, Ellen Cochran, Ed.
Aimed primarily at a museum audience, this book is also a guide for school educators who want to work in partnerships with museums. Fifteen museum school projects are described, all of which received Museum Leadership Initiatives grants in 1994. Projects involve museums focusing on heritage, arts, natural history, sciences, and industry as well as a children's museum, a society for historic preservation, and an aquarium. Project subjects include Science by Satellite, Digging into Art and History, Nurturing Eco-Citizens, and Melding Museums and Curriculum. The chapter "Conditions for Partnerships" describes factors that should form the foundation for partnerships between museum educators and school educators. These factors include commitment from administrators, teacher involvement, understanding of schools' needs, shared vision, planning and evaluation, tangible benefits for teachers, and parent and community involvement. Two essays at the conclusion of this guide entitled "Transforming Museums" by Robert Sullivan and "Transforming Schools" by Paula Evans are based on presentations at the Institute of Museum Services conference "Museums and Schools: Partners for Education" Held in November 1995. The reading list contains 26 books, 13 articles, and 1 video. (PVD)
