Disciplinary Pathways to Service-Learning.

The second in a series on service-learning in the community college, this monograph presents 14 essays by community college faculty, chronicling their experiences in developing service-learning activities. Following two introductory essays describing the current status of service-learning and the purpose and organization of the monograph, the essay, "Service Learning: Theory and Rationale" (Susan J. McAleavey) is presented. The next section provides the following six essays detailing service-learning activities in specific disciplines: "Business and Management" (Sharon Niblock and Norman Kilgore); "Local Stories Local Style: Service-Learning and Composition" (Irena Levy); "Service-Learning and the Humanities" (Robin Fujiwaka); "Service-Learning and Psychology" (Tanya Renner);"Service-Learning and Reading Instruction" (Mavis Hara and Linka Corbin-Mullikin); and "Sociology" (Neghin Modavi). The third section describes service-learning across disciplinary boundaries and contains the following essays: "Developing Service-Learning in Developmental Studies" (Elizabeth Bryer and Carol Gish); "English as a Second Language Courses" (Lin Griffith); "Service-Learning in an Integrated Learning Community Program" (Gerry Rasmussen and Elizabeth Skinner); and "Tribal Colleges: Responding to Cultural Needs" (Kelly Ward). The final section provides resources for further information in the following essays: "Print and Organizational Resources" (Gail Robinson) and "Electronic Resources" (Maria Hesse). (HAA)
